Spirit of Eternal Repose Finds New Home at the College of the Holy Cross
The College of the Holy Cross has received the Auguste Rodin sculpture Le génie du repos éternel (“Spirit of Eternal Repose”), a gift from Iris Cantor.
The Spirit of Eternal Repose is among Rodin’s most significant works. Completed in bronze around 1898, it depicts a man in an outstretched pose with his legs crossed. The iconic sculpture joins 11 other previously gifted Rodin works from the Cantor Collection, making the Cantor Art Gallery at Holy Cross a distinctive stop for those seeking to view Rodin’s work, and an inspiration for the College’s art students. The Spirit now stands in front of the performing arts center, welcoming students inside.
“On behalf of the College and the campus community, I would like to thank Iris Cantor, the Cantor Foundation and Cantor Collection … for their longstanding support of the Cantor Art Gallery,” said Meredith Fluke, former director of the Gallery. “The momentous gift of The Spirit, which joins other Rodin works at the College, is a fitting celebration of the legacy relationship that has facilitated the Gallery’s new program in the Prior Performing Arts Center. I am additionally delighted that the sculpture’s beauty and stunning installation are enhanced by the building’s world-class design, and, together with the Prior Performing Arts Center, signal the centrality of the arts at Holy Cross.”
