Updates on “Building LACMA”
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is undergoing its largest renovation and expansion since its inception. The project to add a new building for permanent collections and revitalize the campus is being dubbed “Building LACMA.” The Cantor Foundation Executive Director, Ryan Fisher, was invited to tour the construction site and the new home of the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Sculpture Garden.
The museum’s new building features a striking, fluid design inspired by the nearby La Brea Tar Pits, characterized by curved facades and high ceilings. The new Cantor Sculpture Garden, situated near the gallery entrance, is nearly double the size of the former one. Forty Rodin works, which will be featured in the Cantor garden, were gifted by the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation.
Within the building, Zumthor sought to eliminate the phenomenon of “museum fatigue,” where visitors may feel exhausted from the fluorescent, sterile environment of most museums, by incorporating natural light.
The much-anticipated opening is expected in 2025. Iris Cantor is proud to be a part of reshaping the landscape of Los Angeles for residents and visitors for generations to come.
